Artists, visual or otherwise, wanted for exhibition in Manchester in cellar of Victorian house, late Jan/Feb 2008.The idea is to get a group of artists to exhibit inside this untended space; not to respond to it as such but to be aware of it, to be aware of its presence and its shapes. The pieces are not to exhibit as a group as such but more to vie for space, to struggle for attendance.The room/s are damp and ugly. The art will not be cared for, watched over, or necessarily respected. The walls are not flat. The room is not well lit. The house is well lived in.
We only want to fill the space, to use these conditions to both their and ourutmost, to have art peeping out of the ground, for it to be a secret, for it to say only what it feels it needs to; with no bolt-ons, no embellishments, nodusted polished frames. There is then left only art and some kind of skewed honesty, some kind of necessity turned into thing, something kind of visual, something left over.
Submit anything. Surprise us. We do not know what we are looking for untilwe see or read it.
No abstract paintings.
The opening will not be announced to tenants.The house will continue to be lived in on and around the launch night.
