SUMMER WORKSHOPS
JULY
SEPTEMBER
2011

BURLESQUE
From 11 to 15 July 2011
Teachers: Jos Houben - Jason Turner
The universe of physical comedy and slapstick for beginners.
First we shall re-play situations as they can be observed
in daily life. The aim is to lay bare how things function
the way they are supposed to.
This will serve as the starting point to explore all possible «disfunctions
»: imbalances, misunderstandings, mishaps, accidents
etc. that create laughter.
Then follows a technical development in which we attempt
to construct an «escalation» of accidents: domino effects
of ever greater imbalances and counterpoints that lead to a
catastrophy.
The workshop is based on improvisation accompanied by
technical work. Physical preparation, dramatic acrobatics
and movement analysis.
The workshop will be given in English and French.
9 am to 11.30 am - 1 pm to 3.30 pm -25h

DRAMA AND TRAGEDY
From 11 to 22 July 2011
Teachers: Paola Rizza - Jason Turner
What spaces, dynamics and driving forces do drama and
tragedy open up? If drama is born out of conflict between
people (bringing into play human nature’s driving forces of
love, hate, jealousy, innocence, vanity...), tragedy opens up
vertically in its struggle with the gods, destiny, forces that
go beyond the merely human.
We will explore the motors of these two dramatic territories.
What are passions and motives that drive the conflicts
of drama and tragedy? What is the level of play, of physical
and imaginative engagement, that can carry these conflicts,
and with what texts? Amongst these questions, we will
be seeing if the modern dramatic hero can attain a tragic
dimension?
10 am to 13pm - 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm -70h

FROM HERO TO BUFFON
«A Midsummer Night’s Dream»
From 5 to 9 September 2011
Teachers: Susana Lastreto - Christophe Marchand
This workshop consists in exploring a dramatic space, characters
and situations through one of the well-known plays
of Shakespeare, following the pedagogy of the school which
is based on movement. It consists of discovering the dynamics
of the play, the situations, the characters, the space as
well as different levels of the dialogues, of the monologues
and narratives, thus proposing to the actor how to broaden
his imagination and his possibilities to accede to the poetics
of his body, the only instrument of his art. This « poetic body
» which each creative-actor should tend towards.
By paraphrasing Jacques Lecoq, « everything moves » we
move in this play from one world to another, from heaven
to earth, from air to mud, from the visible to the invisible.
As always in Shakespeare, everything mingles: Buffoonery
and sublime, magic and triviality, love and hate, laughter and
emotion, illusion and truth.
So in progressing inside this magical and multiple play, we will
progress in the great dramtic territories of the school, towards this
« poetic body » in movement, which may approach the internal
movement of the poet’s text.
9am to 12am - 1.30pm to 5.30pm - 35h

LEM: THE MASKED BODY
From 12 to 23 September 2011
Teachers: Pascale Lecoq - Krikor Bélékian - Jos Houben
With the mask, the actor always has to invent another body.
A metaphoric body felt as a transforming agent. « A moving
body » which projects you into the imaginery world.
The mask which covers the full body recomposes from the
volumes, the lines and the colours, a corporal structure, inventive
and offering many possibilities.
Costumed, dressed : Games of volumes in space recompose
the body as a whole. How can we find the movement induced
by the form according to its planes, its lines, its points,
its mass ?
Each element can be modified and aims at an organic form
totally recreated.
This workshop is a practical journey divided between classes
of movements and classes of constructions.
It is open to persons from all artistic disciplines.
10am to 1pm - 2.30pm to 6pm - 65h

POETRY, MUSIC, PAINTING AND THE PLAY
OF THE ACTOR
From 14 to 23 September 2011
Teachers: Paola Rizza - Christophe Marchand
Observation of life is fundamental in the work of an actor,
who creates the illusion of life through the movements and
dynamics of the visible world. However, the creative act cannot
simply stay on the surface of life, it has to be able to
go deeper, to be able also to reveal what is not immediately
visible, to have another dimension.
This workshop will approach this abstract dimension that we
all carry deep within ourselves by exploring the works of
painters, composers and poets.
Jacques Lecoq spoke of the dynamic emotion that Eiffel
Tower provokes, made up of its rooted base, its aspiring
vertical élan, and how the actor can translate this into
movement.
How can we do this with a picture by Basquiat, or Chagall?
How does the moonlight move, or a poem by Artaud or a
gothic cathedral? What does this approach bring to an actor’s
play and creativity? Can the actor through movement, like
the poet, who puts us in touch with the invisible, evoke light,
sound or colour?
